I like how you took the evidence statements and created the success criteria as it is another way to really get at the heart of the three dimensions and what we are wanting our students to do! We're adopting NGSS-built materials for K-5, and some of our planning discussions have been about strategies for simultaneously conducting initial-use PD for teachers while also introducing them to NGSS (no K-5 PD on NGSS yet).

I like the idea of drawing from the PE & evidence statements to describe what students should learn to do. While clearly standards-based and 3-dimensional, this could be done in a way that does not overwhelm folks who are new to NGSS. Hmm...could also guide some simple formative or summative assessments.

Thanks for the coaching.Tom Hathornhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01664464903649938988noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275859280878901428.post-31476731747771180442016-03-16T14:20:19.495-07:002016-03-16T14:20:19.495-07:00Thanks, you are motivating me to get busy at our s...Thanks, you are motivating me to get busy at our school. I tell my staff all the time that we are making this up as we go. There have been a number of blind alleys we went down and had to back track. Trial and error has been my constant companion. The table I ended my post with is the latest attempt to help teachers understand the NGSS at a deep level. Some of them think we make this stuff up. This table has helped to simplify the complexity of the NGSS. You should also take a look at my post regarding learning progressions. We are trying to move towards customized instruction. It drives me crazy watching kids get retaught content they already know. In the long term, we will try to figure out what small group instruction in science looks like. Each group doing something different commensurate with their needs. ericromwellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17432815723261197870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6275859280878901428.post-89651714051945475292016-03-16T07:49:24.427-07:002016-03-16T07:49:24.427-07:00First time reading your blog. Our district is working towards implementing the NGSS and in my opinion, struggling. I love science and want to help move this effort forward. Big question, how do you get a huge group of teachers to understand the instructional shifts necessary to even begin implementing the NGSS. How did you, as an administrator, educate yourself on the standards? I have been going to as many trainings on my own as I can find and feel like I have barely touched the surface. Any words of wisdom? Thanks!
